The Cobden Club was founded in 1866 for believers in “Free trade, peace and goodwill among nations”, and named in honour of
Richard Cobden the corn law reformer, who died the year before.
Built beside the Great Western canal, its members were laundry workers, totters and others of the worthy poor of Notting Hill. Men from the local gasworks then joined, as did workers from a nearby biscuit factory, both now closed. They would have been surprised to encounter some of the club's future visitors: Mick Jagger, Richard Branson, Boy George, Mick Jones, Brandon Flowers, Martin Amis, Lily Allen, David Grey, Hamish McAlpine, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Kate Moss, Annie Lennox and many more prominent figures from the art, fashion, music and literary professions.
You will be sadly missed. Happy New Year and goodbye to
The Cobden Club.
